How to write religious sympathy messages

A religious sympathy message offers comfort through shared faith: a prayer for peace, a reminder of God's presence, or hope of being reunited. The most comforting ones are short and gentle. Grief makes reading hard, so two or three sentences are plenty.

Only use faith-based language if you know the person shares it; otherwise a simple "thinking of you" message is kinder. If you knew the person who died, add a short memory of them. And if you can, offer something practical: a meal, a ride, or simply your presence.

Questions people ask

What do you write in a religious sympathy card?
Express your sorrow, offer a short prayer for comfort, and if you knew the person, share a brief memory. "Praying God gives you peace and strength in the days ahead."
What Bible verse can I use in a sympathy card?
Comforting choices include Psalm 34:18 ("The Lord is close to the brokenhearted") and Matthew 5:4 ("Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted").
Is it okay to say 'they're in a better place'?
Only if you know the family believes that and would find it comforting. Otherwise, focus on your love and support.
