The thing she actually wants to read
Most Mother's Day cards say “thank you for everything”. The ones moms reread say what “everything” was. Think of one thing she did that you only appreciated later: the packed lunches, the late pickups, the way she stayed calm when you weren't. Put that in the card.
- 1
Name one thing she did
“Thank you for every 6am ride to swim practice.” Specific always beats general. - 2
Say what it meant
“I didn't notice then, but I do now.” This is the line that makes moms cry, in a good way. - 3
Finish with love
“Happy Mother's Day. I love you.” You don't need more.
Happy Mother's Day! Thank you for every hug, every lesson and every packed lunch.
You're the heart of our home. Happy Mother's Day!
Happy Mother's Day to the strongest, kindest person I know.
Mother's Day card for your wife
When you're writing on behalf of the family, focus on her as a mom: the patience, the bedtime routines, the things only you see her do. Thank her for something specific from this year. Then let the kids add their part, even if it's a scribble or a heart.
Happy Mother's Day to my wife, the most amazing mom our kids could ask for.
Watching you be a mom makes me fall in love with you all over again. Happy Mother's Day.
Happy Mother's Day, my love. Our kids are so lucky to have you.
For grandmothers, mothers-in-law and mother figures
Mother's Day is for everyone who mothered you. A grandmother might love a memory from your childhood at her house. A mother-in-law will appreciate being thanked for raising your partner. A stepmom, aunt, teacher or friend who stepped in when you needed it might never have been told what that meant. “You've been like a mom to me” is a sentence people remember for the rest of their lives.
If you're far away
A call is lovely; a card she can open again is lovelier. Add a photo of the two of you, record a short voice note saying happy Mother's Day, and schedule it to open on Sunday morning. Our guide to ecards with photos and voice shows how.
More words for mom

Mom, thank you for showing me how to be strong and kind at the same time.

I love you, Mom. Thank you for everything, from the big sacrifices to the tiny kindnesses.
Mom, I don't say it enough: I love you, and I'm so grateful you're mine.
Just a little note to say I love you, Mom. You're my safe place.
