How to use a short poem in a card

A four-line poem works best as the opening or closing of a card, with a sentence or two of your own around it. Start with the poem, then add something personal: "Happy birthday! I mean every word, especially the cake part." The rhyme sets the mood; your line makes it yours.

Read it out loud before you send it. If one line doesn't sound like the person, swap it for a line from another poem in the same occasion; every couplet is written to pair with any other, so you can mix and match freely.

Tips for writing your own rhyme

Keep each line about the same length and use simple, everyday rhymes: day and way, heart and start, you and true. Short words make poems easier to read and harder to get wrong. A rhyme doesn't need to be clever; it needs to be warm.

If you get stuck, write the feeling first in plain words, then find a rhyme for the last word. For example, "I'm proud of you" becomes "We're proud of you, we always knew." You can find more inspiration in our birthday wishes and I love you messages.

Every poem, by occasion

Birthday

  • Another year, another cake, Another wish for you to make. The candles glow, the party's here, I hope this is your brightest year.
  • May laughter fill your special day, And joy keep finding you its way. You make the ordinary shine, I'm lucky that your life touched mine.
  • So blow them out and make it big, Then eat the cake and dance a jig. Here's to the plans and dreams you hold, And every story yet untold.
  • Some people make the world feel kind, And you're the first that comes to mind. A little older, wiser too, The world's a better place with you.

Anniversary

  • Another year of you and me, The best place I could ever be. Through every high and every low, You're still the one I'd choose, you know.
  • Our story's just begun, it's true, I'd write each chapter next to you. You hold my hand, you hold my heart, You've had them both right from the start.
  • With every year our love grows deep, A promise that we'll always keep. The coffee cups, the inside jokes, The way you laugh, the way you poke.
  • I'd find you in a crowded room, And still feel flowers start to bloom. So here's to us and years ahead, And every word we've left unsaid.

Love

  • No holiday, no special date, Just love for you that couldn't wait. You're my calm, my spark, my home, With you I'm never quite alone.
  • I love your laugh, I love your smile, I'd walk with you for every mile. Of all the hearts I've ever known, Yours is the one that feels like home.
  • The stars could fall, the seas could rise, I'd still get lost inside your eyes. A tiny note to say it's true, My favorite thing in life is you.

Thank you

  • For all you do and all you give, I'm thankful every day I live. You showed up when I needed you, And that's a thing I won't undo.
  • A simple thanks can't say enough, For helping me when times were tough. Your kindness made my whole week bright, You turned my worries into light.
  • So here's a card to say it's true, The world needs many more of you. You didn't have to, but you did, And that's a gift I'll never hide.

Get well

  • I'm sending soup and lots of rest, And wishes that you'll feel your best. Stay tucked in tight and take it slow, We'll be right here, I want you to know.
  • The couch is comfy, tea is hot, Get well soon, you're missed a lot. Each day a little better still, Until you're back with all your will.
  • Your laugh is missing from the room, So please get well, and get well soon. Let others help, let others do, This time it's our turn to care for you.

Christmas

  • The lights are up, the cocoa's hot, And you're the gift I'm glad I've got. May snowflakes fall and hearts be light, And all your Christmas dreams take flight.
  • With cookies, carols, cozy cheer, I'm wishing you the best this year. Around the tree and by the fire, May you get all that you desire.
  • The season's bright, the season's kind, And you're the first that comes to mind. So here's to joy and peace and rest, This Christmas be your very best.

Mother's Day

  • For every hug and every meal, For teaching me the way to feel. You held my hand when I was small, And caught me every time I'd fall.
  • Your love's the first I ever knew, And everything good starts with you. Today's for you, so rest and play, Happy, happy Mother's Day.
  • The lunchbox notes, the bedtime songs, You've been my home my whole life long. If I had flowers for each care, I'd fill a garden everywhere.

Father's Day

  • You taught me how to fix a tire, And how to keep my dreams on fire. For every ride and every game, For cheering loud and calling my name.
  • Your jokes are bad, your hugs are great, You always helped me stand up straight. So kick back, Dad, and take a rest, Today we celebrate the best.
  • You built a home with steady hands, And always tried to understand. The grill is hot, the game is on, Happy Father's Day, from dusk to dawn.

Valentine's

  • Roses are red, my heart is too, It's been that way since I met you. Be mine today, be mine for good, I'd pick you twice if I only could.
  • A box of chocolates, one red rose, But you're the sweetest, heaven knows. My heart does flips when you are near, Happy Valentine's, my dear.
  • Of all the loves in songs and art, You're the only one who has my heart. So here's my heart in paper red, And all the things I've never said.

Sympathy

  • No words can ease the ache you feel, But know my love for you is real. I'm holding you in every thought, And all the comfort can be brought.
  • May memories, both warm and bright, Bring comfort through the longest night. Lean on me when days are long, You don't have to be so strong.
  • A gentle note to let you know, I'm here for you, wherever you go. May peace find you in quiet hours, Like morning light on sleeping flowers.

Graduation

  • The tassel's turned, the cap's been thrown, Look how much you've learned and grown. The late-night cramming, coffee cups, You kept your chin and spirits up.
  • The world is wide, the road is new, And all of it is waiting for you. So chase your dreams and aim up high, You've got the wings, now learn to fly.
  • We're proud of you, we always knew, There's nothing that you couldn't do. Today we cheer and celebrate, Congratulations, graduate!
